Why Goals Are Important: 3 Good Reasons

Depending on the field of activity, the approach to working with goals differs significantly. However, whether in your career, health, relationships, or personal growth, goals give your actions meaning. It gives you clarity and helps to filter distractions and make better decisions. Moreover, from a psychological perspective, goals are even drivers of behavior. And may change you completely. But how? Let's take it point by point.

Below I'll list the reasons why goals are important for everyone. But before I begin, I want to warn you that goals must be measurable. Be sure to read the article on how to set goals effectively. If goals aren't measurable, achieving them will be extremely difficult. And the list below won't be relevant to you.

1. Goals Сreate Directions

Without goals, it’s easy to drift. With them, you have purpose. Without goals you react instead of act. You wake up and go through the motions, but you’re not aiming for anything. Goals change that. They help you focus and push forward.

Metaphorically, I'd describe it as a lighthouse for a ship in foggy weather. It's difficult to reach the port when you can't see anything. And there's a high risk of running aground or hitting a reef. In other words, a lack of clear goals can cost you time or even lead to problems.

Or, for example, imagine you're in an unfamiliar city. The goal is the final destination on your GPS tracker. You know exactly where to go and what awaits you there.

2. Goals Give You Motivation

When things get hard, goals give you a reason to keep going. Motivation doesn’t come from nowhere. For example, it comes from caring about the outcome. And from the vision of the result. If you have a clear vision of what you want and what you're striving for, current challenges will be perceived as steps. As you climb these steps, you'll get closer to your goal. And, crucially, you'll see progress. This again brings us back to the importance of measurable goals.

The image below depicts two situations. When a person doesn’t have a goal, problems can create a feeling of hopelessness. But when a person has a goal, the same problems will feel like an obstacle to be overcome.

3. Goals Build Confidence and Discipline

The act of working toward a goal changes you. You focus, prioritize, and eliminate unnecessary things. Even if you fall short, you still grow. You learn skills, build habits, and expand your capacity.

For example, let’s say you set a goal to learn Spanish in a year. Maybe you don’t become fluent but along the way, you pick up vocabulary, understand grammar, and build cultural awareness. That’s also a win. Growth happened because the goal was set. It may not be obvious, but yes, goals are even important itself. Even if you were not able to fully achieve the desired result.
